We're building a pair of twin 22" mirrors for a binocular telescope! In addition to the 22" F/4.0 primary mirrors, we are also going to fabricate a matching pair of 5.5" secondary mirrors for the 'scope. I believe that these 22" bino's are likely to be the largest pair of binoculars in amateur hands.

This is an interesting build, as the mirrors for a binocular instrument must match quite exactly in focal length. With our computer-controlled Strasbaugh digital spherometer, it's possible to monitor the focal lengths during grinding and polishing. This precision measurement allows adjustments during fabrication so that the two mirrors will be both exactly matched, and very close to the target 176" radius of curvature.

Our client is already starting work on the telescope's mechanical components, and hopes to take the finished instrument to the 2014 Winter Star Party. That event runs from February 23rd through March 2nd, 2014, and is held every year in the Florida Keys. Can't wait to stand in line for THAT view! Imagine, a 22" F/4.0 telescope for each eye! Plus having the chance to observe southern-sky objects not available from our home is yet another enticement.
