Gordon,

Your design of the Renegade allows total access to the mirror. When time comes to clean the mirror, what cleaning solutions and method would you recommend? I have an old 12 1/2" dob, the mirror is mounted inside a solid tube. When not in use it has closures on both ends. I have only cleaned this mirror 3 X's in 7 years by rinsing with distilled water and drying with very low pressure canned air.

Re: Mirror cleaning

Hi, Ken!

I don't like to clean mirrors too often. When I do, I use a distilled water rinse, just the same as you. If a mirror is extremely dirty, I use a few drops of liquid dish detergent in some water, and let that sit on the mirror for a while. Perhaps a gentle rub with a finger tip. Then rinse with distilled until the suds are all gone. It must be pretty dirty to get me to do this! Cleaning this way won't scratch the mirror, but it might leave tiny sleeks in the aluminum surface. These won't hurt the image much, if at all, and they will disappear the next time the mirror is coated.
